Al V. Waverek

February 10, 1923 – December 16, 2014

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 20, 2014 at St. John the Baptist Abbey Church in Collegeville for Al V. Waverek, age 91 of Avon who passed away on Tuesday, December 16, 2014 at Quiet Oaks Hospice House in St. Augusta. Reverend Gregory Miller, OSB will officiate. Interment of cremated remains will take place at Calvary Cemetery at a later date.
Family and friends may call from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Friday at St. John the Baptist Parish Center and after 9:00 a.m. on Saturday at the church. Parish prayers will be at 5:00 p.m. on Friday at the parish center. Arrangements were by the Daniel Funeral Home, St. Joseph.
Al was born February 10, 1923 in Holdingford, Minnesota to Valentine and Agnes (Drygas) Waverek. He was a decorated U.S Army Veteran of WWII serving in the 87th regiment, 10th Mountain Infantry Division in the European and Pacific Theaters. At the age of 15 Al and his brother Tony enlisted together. Al served his country for seven years. Al married Helen A. Netter on November 28, 1944 at St. John Cantius Catholic Church in St. Cloud. He was employed by the Great Northern Railroad and later the Burlington Northern Railroad for 38 years, retiring as a conductor in 1983. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Parish, Burlington Northern Veterans, National Association of Retired Veteran Railway Employees, and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Granite Post #428.
Al was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish. After the war, Al continued to enjoy his love of X-country skiing late into his 80’s. His other hobbies included carpentry work, gardening and landscaping his beautiful home in Avon.
Al is survived by his wife, Helen; children, Toni Teigen of Rochester, Tom (Sandi) of Kalispell, Montana, Annette (Rob) Wurl of Solana Beach, California, Barb (Jim) Reedstrom of Duluth, John of Lolo, Montana, Mary of Avon, Natalie (Dennis) Chalmers of Northbrook, Illinois and Joe (Sylvia) of Champlin; 17 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and sister, Lucille Johnson of Sartell.
He was preceded in death by his parents and 15 brothers and sisters.
Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers.

Deeply saddened to hear of Uncle Al’s passing. He was a kind and decent man, dearly beloved by my Grandmother Sally. No doubt, there is a happy reunion in heaven. May he rest in peace…

The memories I have of my Uncle. The stories, laughter, snorts of Brandy. Glad you are sitting right next to all your family as the newest member up there next to my Grandma Eleanor.

Al, thanks for looking out for my safety while working with you on freight and passenger trains. I was the young kid hiring out in 1965 as a brakeman. Say HI to the other rails that are “HIGH BALLING” that big train in the sky. RIP
