Anthony J. "Tony" Ament

July 5, 1911 – October 25, 2014

Anthony J. “Tony” Ament, age 103, of St. Cloud, left us for his heavenly home on October 25, 2014.
A respected husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and community leader, Tony shared his work ethic, leadership skills and love of the outdoors for more than 103 years. He learned about hard work at an early age then put those lessons to good use building a successful contracting business in St. Cloud, founding and leading community organizations and serving in many volunteer roles.
Tony was born July 5, 1911 to Jacob and Matilda Ament in Bluffton, MN. He married Rose Uselman on April 12, 1937 in their hometown at St. Ann’s Catholic Church. The couple settled in St. Cloud where they raised four children.
Tony founded and nurtured several community groups. He was a Fourth Degree Knight and established the Bishop Zardetti Council and the Cold Spring Council Knights of Columbus. Tony held leadership positions in both councils including District Deputy and Faithfull Navigator. He was recognized with the Outstanding Achievement Award for his years of dedicated service in 1988.
Tony and Rose were charter members of Holy Spirit Parish. Tony established the church’s bouja fundraiser replique montre suisse in the 1960s, building the first “bouja shack” and serving as head cook for many years. Thousands of gallons of bouja were created and sold to benefit the church under his watchful eye. He also volunteered for Tri-Cap serving meals at the Salvation Army into his late 80s.
For many years Tony and Rose wintered in Phoenix, AZ. They enjoyed the desert warmth, playing cards, playing golf and sitting poolside with friends. In later years, they took pleasure in all of Minnesota’s seasons – even winter-with their loveable Daschund Lisa.
Tony is survived by his children Yvonne Maus, Bob (Karen) Ament, Gary (Ruth) Ament and Mary Jo (Larry) Lorenz, 11 grandchildren, and 24 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Rose (2013), son-in-law Don Maus, 9 brothers and 6 sisters.
Tony will be remembered and his life celebrated with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. on Thursday, October 30 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in St. Cloud. Reverend Thomas Knoblach will officiate. Entombment will take place in Assumption Cemetery Mausoleum.
Visitation will take place from 4-8 p.m. on Wednesday and after 10 a.m. on Thursday both at Holy Spirit Catholic Church. The Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, Father Pierz Assembly will stand honor guard from 5-8 p.m. on Wednesday and again before services on Thursday. Parish Prayers will be held at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the church.
A special Thank You to Anthony’s long time doctor; Dr. Lindquist and the caregivers at Talahi Care Facility, for the excellent care given.

I just heard today, Thursday, of your dad’s passing. I’m sure your Mom was there to greet him. Please accept my sincere condolences and prayers for your family. You will miss him.

I have a life memory of Tony. When I first met him, I was a skinny, scary looking dude, just out of the navy, wild hair, scragley beard and courting his baby. If it had been me,, I would have sent me packing. So, to my surprise, Tony took me fishing! ME!! One of the chain lakes near Cold spring. Caught a bunch of sunnies, bright them to his house and he let me clean them for supper. That act forever secured a dear place in my heart for a wonderful human. I will miss you.

I am so sorry for your loss. Please know that you are never alone. You can find much comfort in the Holy Scriptures which assures us at Psalms 34:18 that God is near to those broken at heart and crushed in spirit. Please accept my deepest sympathies.

Two weeks ago my Dad was riding the exercise bike ……… today I know he is in heaven. Life can change quickly especially when you’re 103. It’s a very difficult time for our family to endure but we are not sad ……. rather we are joyful that we have been blessed with our Dad (and Mom who left us just last year) for so many years. My Dad had a very clear set of priorities in life ……. his Heavenly Father, his wife Rosie, his four children, and his Catholic Faith community. The day before my Dad passed away Fr. Timothy form Holy Spirit Parish came to my Dad’s bed to perform the Anointing of the Sick ……. we prayed and my Dad had a little smile because he new where he would soon be going. It was a wonderful experience.

One of my Dad’s frequent sayings was “put er in the ole vise” (when shaking hands with someone). I told my Dad the other night (when we had a “Family Last Supper” with him) that the first thing Jesus would say to him when he got to heaven was “Welcome Tony …… You have the fought the good fight, you have completed the course, you have kept the faith …….. Put er in the ole vise”.

I am thankful I grew up I such a loving home, with the best parents a child could have.
