Aurea was born on December 10, 1926 in Melrose, to Paul and Beatha (Hoffman) Buttweiler. She married Philip Goerger on August 30, 1947 at Holy Angels Catholic Church in St. Cloud. She lived in Melrose, and moved to St. Cloud in 1994. She was employed as an Activities Coordinator at Pine Villa Nursing Home in Melrose. Growing up along the banks of the Sauk River, Aurea was an avid swimmer and cherished time spent near the water. She enjoyed a good book and any chance to play a game of cards.  She took every opportunity to spoil her grandchildren rotten. Aurea always looked forward to being surrounded by family and friends. She sought in small ways to make the world around her more beautiful. Her strength, resolve and love will endure through those who knew and loved her.

She was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Eagles Aerie #622 Auxiliary, honorary member of St. Stephen’s Mission Group, and a charter member of the Melrose American Legion Auxiliary.

Aurea is survived by: children Gary, Philip (Sue), Patty (Joseph) Mareck, Ruthie (Mark) Steen; son-in-law Michael Forslund; grandchildren: Michael and Philip Forslund, Sam and Ben Goerger, Matt and John Mareck, Sven and Mackenzie Steen; 4 great-grandchildren; sisters Lois Schanhaar, Shirley (Jim) Albers; brother Paul Buttweiler, sister-in-law Orty Buttweiler.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Phil, daughter Mary Forslund, infant sons James and John, brother Gene Buttweiler, sister-in-law Joan Buttweiler and brother-in-law Bart Schanhaar.

The family would like to express their gratitude and thankfulness to the St. Benedict’s Community for their faithful and compassionate care for Aurea.

I have special memories of Aurea. I was often invited over to the Goerger home as a friend of Patty. I remember Aurea being loving and fun. She always made me feel very welcome in their home. She was a beautiful lady inside and out and will be missed. Love and prayers to Patty and family.

Aurea holds a special place in my heart and in the hearts of the Earl and Teenie Wiehoff family. Teenie Flock and Aurea were great friends growing up in Melrose. Teenie told us very funny stories of the two of them singing in the Melrose High School choir. Aside from the stories, I remember being smitten by Aurea’s warm and loving personality topped off by a beautiful, laughing, smiling face. I can still hear her laughter and sing song voice. She will be deeply missed by all. May all of you find peace in reliving the great memories she left behind. She was truly a most precious person. Loves and Hugs, Pam Wiehoff-Kaufman
