Leo J. Mockenhaupt, Jr.

November 29, 1926 – October 16, 2016

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 20, 2016 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, St. Cloud for Leo J. Mockenhaupt, Jr., age 89 of St. Cloud who passed away on Sunday, October 16, 2016. Reverend Gregory Lieser will officiate. Entombment will take place at the Assumption Cemetery Mausoleum in St. Cloud with military honors.

Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the Daniel Funeral Home in St. Cloud and after 10:30 a.m. on Thursday at the church. Parish prayers will be 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Leo was born November 29, 1926 in St. Cloud, Minnesota to Leo Carl and Rose (Kurtz) Mockenhaupt. He grew up in Monticello and attended Monticello High School until his senior year when he enlisted in the Navy during World War II. He proudly served as a gunner on the Battleship USS Massachusetts from 1943-1946. He then returned to Monticello High School to complete his senior year of high school in 1947. He then attended meat cutter school on the GI Bill.

He married Agnes Klocker on October 23, 1950 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church and made their home in St. Cloud. He worked for the Great Northern Railroad later known as Burlington Northern Railroad for 30 years. Leo was a life member of the Waite Park American Legion Silver Star Post #428, St. Cloud Eagles Aerie #622, St. Cloud VFW Granite Post #428 and the National Association of Retired Veteran Railway Employees Unit #107 (NARVRE). He was a current member of St. Peter’s Parish and former member of St. Anthony’s Parish for over 50 years.

Leo enjoyed woodworking in his workshop, processing venison, morning coffee visits at Brigette’s Cafe and lunch at the Shortstop Restaurant in St. Cloud. He enjoyed spending time at their Crow Wing Lake Home, Brainerd for over 40 years and ice fishing was his passion. He had many friends in the “North Country”. Family gatherings were important to him and he enjoyed spending time with his “sweeties”.

Leo’s passion for football, baseball, and basketball started when in the 7th grade. He was placed on varsity for five years at Monticello High School. He enjoyed following his grandchildren as they participated in a variety of school sports.

He is survived by his wife Agnes of 66 years; children, Linda (Dan) Rudnitski of Baxter, Diane (John) Spaniol of Sartell, Ronald (Deborah) of St. Cloud, Karen Kampa (Troy Waldoch) of St. Cloud, Sharon Schaefer (Duane Berg) of St. Cloud and Nancy (Russell) Rudnitski of Gilman. He is also survived by grandchildren Kevin, Maggie, Rachel, Melissa, Abby, Ryan, Kayla, Emily, Holly, Brady, Brian, Nicole, Jeremy, and Katie, nine great grandchildren; and sister, Ann Rose (Dan) Switzer, Indianapolis, Indiana.

He was preceded in death by infant daughter, Mary; parents Leo and Rose; and in-laws Joseph and Mary Klocker.

The family would like to extend a thank you to the Physicians (Dr. Nelson & Dr. Marek) and the staff of MPCU and Medical Unit 2 at St. Cloud Hospital, Spiritual Care team and Dr. Mohamed Maray, his primary care physician.

Special thank you to his Country Manor caregivers the past years and the St. Peter’s Church volunteers who made weekly visits after Leo became homebound.

So sorry for your loss

It was great getting to know you guys at the lake. I can still picture Leo sitting on his swing that he loved so much. Our love here on earth, it the Lord’s gain in heaven. May you feel the arms of God wrapped around you and your family during this difficult time.

Leo was a great human being and fun to be with. We will miss him dearly. Sincere condolences to Aggie and family.

May your hearts be filled with all the wonderful memories of Leo. He was quite an interesting man, I especially enjoyed speaking German with him. Heartfelt condolensces with you all.
