We are a sum of our parts. This week I learned that a part of what made me who I am was gone. A childhood friend who moved away after high school had passed away.
I met Lisa (Boule) Hogenson in junior high school. She would become a friend, and then a girlfriend, my first girlfriend. From a first kiss while playing spin the bottle and later a date for the junior prom in high school, she was a friend who helped me learn about relationships and love, or what awkward teenagers think love might be.
I remember stopping by the pale green house on Norwood Street in Marlborough after school to hang out and listen to Neil Diamond’s “Hot August Night” for what seemed like a 100 times. Maybe getting a ride home in the Dodge Dart that nearly matched the shade of the house. Going to see friends in musical performances of Jesus Christ Superstar.
I would sometimes bring her a single yellow rose. Red was much too serious, pink was too common, and white wasn’t enough. Yellow was a sign that I liked and cared for her.
I remember her mother Joan, the first time I was exposed to a single mom, working hard to support her 2 daughters and care for her own mother. I remember her little sister Renee, always curious to see what her big sister Lisa was up to.
I remained friends with Lisa throughout high school, and kept in touch while we went off to college. I visited her in N. Dakota when I was in the Army and a neighborhood friend of mine in the Air Force was stationed in Minot. That was over 25 years ago and the last time I spoke with her.
Today I am filled with sorrow to learn of her passing, but warm-hearted to think of the friendship and memories we shared and how she helped me to become the caring, loving husband and father that I am today.
To Lisa, the yellow rose of my youth, may you rest in eternal peace.
Love,
Stephen Brooks

Joan and Renee, I’m so very sorry. I hope the memory of her love will ease your pain.

The loss of your beautiful presence leaves a hole in humanity. Sending much love to the broken hearts left to mourn that loss.

I would like to extend my heartfelt condolences. May you find comfort in warm memories and the Bible promises for the future. Revelation 21:3,4 ” With that I heard a loud voice from the throne say :’ Look! The tent of God is with mankind, and he will reside with them, and they will be his people. And God himself will be with them. And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away. ‘ ” My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Lisa, you truly were a devoted Grandmother. No matter what, you always looked after the boys, and welcomed them into your life without hesitation. When Max came into Our world, you were there to greet him and love him and help make sure he had every opportunity to thrive and succeed. I will not forget, nor will I ever allow the children to forget, that you were ALWAYS there for them through thick and thin. You sent me a Christmas card this past holiday (you constantly sent thoughtful cards!) that I will cherish and keep forever as a reminder that life is too short, and that it is never too soon or too late to show God’s Love, Mercy, and Grace to the most vulrable of Us. Your nieces Love, Honour, and Respect for you is another tesitimemt to your love for Christ. God have Mercy and May Peace be with your Spirit. Love, Andy
