Marcellus F. "Louie" Garding

October 29, 1930 – July 21, 2016

Mass of Christian Burial celebrating the life of Marcellus F. “Louie” Garding, 85, of Paynesville will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, July 25, 2016 at St. Louis Catholic Church in Paynesville. Louie passed away peacefully while sleeping on Thursday, July 21, 2016 at Hilltop Care Center in Watkins, after a brief battle with cancer. Reverend Robert Harren will officiate. Entombment will be in St. Louis Parish Cemetery Mausoleum.
Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Sunday and after 9:30 a.m. on Monday both at St. Louis Catholic Church. Arrangements are with Daniel-Anderson Funeral Home, Paynesville.
Louie was born on October 29, 1930, on the family farm in St. Martin, to Mathias and Rose (Hoppe) Garding. He married Mary Lou Sumbs on June 13, 1953 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sauk Rapids. They resided in Kimball and Freeport prior to building their home in Paynesville in 1958. Louie was employed with Cold Spring Granite for over 20 years, helped with farming for Joe Williams and also at his Implement Store, and lastly he worked for Stonegate Lodge in Paynesville for over 20 years. He was a member of St. Louis Parish.
Louie was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed ice fishing, hunting, gardening, baseball, golfing, lawn care and snow removal. He also enjoyed word search games, reading the paper. Above all, he treasured time with his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will be remembered for his hard work ethic as well as his kind and gentle nature.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Lou; daughters, Debbie Wendt, of Grove City, Judy Johnson, of Litchfield, Linda (Tom) Schaefer, of Phoenix, AZ; grandsons, Eric (Ivy) Wendt, Travis (Johanne) Johnson and Keith Johnson; great-grandchildren, Avery Marcellus and Sienna Johnson; and three sisters, Julietta Garding of Sauk Rapids, Delores Zierden, of Sauk Rapids and Maryann Birr, of St. Cloud.
He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Cory Wendt; son-in-law, Curtis Wendt; three infant siblings; brother, Celestine; and sisters, Veronica Sterns and Eileen Balman.
