Mathias "Matt" Leyendecker

June 1, 1923 – March 31, 2015

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. on Monday, April 6, 2015 at St. Louis Catholic Church in Paynesville for Mathias “Matt” Leyendecker, age 91, of Paynesville who passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 31, 2015 at the VA Medical Center in St. Cloud. Reverend Glenn Krystosek will officiate. Burial will take place in the St. Agnes Parish Cemetery in Roscoe.

 

Relatives and friends may call from 4-8 p.m. on Sunday, April 5, at the St. Louis Catholic Church in Paynesville. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Monday. Arrangements are with Daniel-Anderson Funeral Home, Paynesville.

Matt was born on June 1, 1923 in Eden Lake Township, Stearns County, Minnesota to the late John P. and Mary (Kirchner) Leyendecker. He was a proud WWII veteran, serving in the US Army from 1944-1946. He married Marie Kolb on June 15, 1949 at St. Mary’s Cathedral in St. Cloud. Matt and Marie lived for many years in Roscoe and retired to Paynesville where they resided for 22 years. They moved to John Paul Apartments in Cold Spring in 2011. Matt was employed as a carpenter as well as owning and operating “Matt’s Cabinet Shop” in Roscoe. He was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council #3820, St. Joseph’s Men’s Society, Catholic Order of Foresters and the Paynesville American Legion Post #271.

Matt enjoyed hunting, fishing, baseball, and playing cards.

He is survived by his nine children: Charles (Rose) of Cold Spring, Diane (Ken) Thomes of Andover, Doris (Leon) Heinen of St. Cloud, Jane (Tom) Widmer of Richmond, Denis (Mary) of Rochester, Connie (Marv) Mueller of Cold Spring, Tim (Shelly) of Cold Spring, Sharon (Ben) Gertken of Richmond and Brenda (Dennis) Lieser of Spring Hill; 20 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; sister and brothers, Bernice Roggensack of California, Leo (Dorothy) of Paynesville and Ray (Alice) of Sartell.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie in 2011; three grandchildren, Shawn Leyendecker, Tracy Mueller and Sara Leyendecker; great grandson, Daniel Thielman; and brothers and sisters, Agnes Ritsche, Richard, Norman, Paul, Elmer, Marjorie Hulsing, Pauline Dineen and Ralph.
