Reverend Roger J. Thoennes

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, September 30, 2015 at the Cathedral of Saint Mary, St. Cloud, Minnesota for Reverend Roger J. Thoennes who died on September 21, 2015, at the rectory in Luxemburg. The Most Reverend Donald Kettler, Bishop of St. Cloud will preside. Burial will be at Saint John the Baptist Cemetery, Collegeville, Minnesota.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday at Mary of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Rockville and after 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday at the Cathedral of St. Mary in St. Cloud. A Vigil Service will be held on Tuesday, September 29, 2015 at 7:00 p.m. at Mary of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Rockville, Minnesota.

Reverend Roger Jacob Thoennes was born on May 18, 1957, in Melrose, MN. He was the son of Berthold and Rose Marie Mehr Thoennes. Father Thoennes attended Sacred Heart Grade School, Freeport, MN, and Melrose Public High School, Melrose, MN. He received his college training at Saint Cloud State University, St. Cloud, MN; and his seminary training at Crosier Seminary, Onamia, MN, and Saint John’s Seminary, Collegeville, MN. Father Thoennes was ordained on June 9, 1990, at the Cathedral of Saint Mary, St. Cloud, MN, by the Most Reverend Jerome Hanus, OSB. He celebrated his First Mass on June 10, 1990, at Sacred Heart Church, Freeport, MN.

Father Thoennes served in the following parish assignments: associate pastor, Saint Mary’s, Little Falls, July 1990-March 1993; parochial administrator, Immaculate Conception, Rice, March 1993-July 1993; pastor, Holy Cross, Harding and St. John Nepomuk, Lastrup, July 1993-July 2005; St. John Nepomuk, Lake Reno and Our Lady of the Runestone, Kensington, July 2005-July 2014. Currently serving as parochial vicar for St. Wendelin, Luxemburg, Holy Cross, Pearl Lake, and Mary of the Immaculate Conception, Rockville.

Father Thoennes is survived by his sisters, Shirley Thoennes of St. Cloud, MN, and Karla Thoennes, of River Falls, WI.

Father Thoennes was preceded in death by his parents Berthold and Rose Marie Thoennes; and brother, Robert.

Karla, Shirley and other family – I was so sorry to hear of Roger’s unexpected passing. What a shock. It’s a little strange for me to see him in his collar; in my mind, I just imagine him as your bother, fighting with, teasing, arguing, supporting and loving his two sisters.
