Born the second child of Mildred and Fred Grobe, John grew up in Minneapolis receiving his BA from Saint John’s University and MBA from the University of St. Thomas.  While he spent his career in administration, his real passions lay in raising his family, mentoring others and working with his hands.  Active and upbeat until the day he suffered a massive stroke, John died surrounded by his family.  He was a true “people” person, ready to strike up a conversation with anyone he came across.

He will be missed by many, especially his wife, of 46 years, Joan; children, Sam (Lara), Genevieve, Ben (Joanne) and Fr. Lew O.S.B.; granddaughters, Zoe and Sophie; and sister, Joanne (Larry) Sandberg.

Memorials can be made to Saint John’s Abbey.

I am deeply saddened by this news. My prayers and heartfelt condolences to Father Lew, his Mother and entire family.
Take comfort in knowing we are not our own, but belong entirely, body and soul, to our loving Savior, Jesus Christ.

I was so sorry to hear about the passing of John. For many years, our family travelled from Houston, Texas to Minnesota to visit Swanville, MN, home of my Grandparents and Uncle as well as the Minneapolis area to visit the Grobe and Berzak families. My thoughts and prayers are with all of his family. May they find comfort in knowing that all who know the family are feeling the loss.of John. Blessings Linda Wellens Pugh Gates

I worked for and with John on several facility projects. He was a true gentleman in all regards. Just one of the nicest and kindest people I have known. My best to all of his family and friends.

Father Lew – this is such a huge loss to our Benedictine community.
I heard so many amazing reports of the class of 1972 50th reunion and the great times at your parents home this summer. Your families’ commitment to the Saint Johns Abbey, University and Community are awe inspiring! May you rest in peace and know of our love for you and your family – wishing the Grobe house and family Peace Always…..Jim and Barb Platten

John and I lived and worked for a year together in the SJU admissions office with Fr. Don Lemay and Roger Young among others. Shared many happy times and cooked many meals together when not travelling. I very much appreciated his positive attitude which he exhibited to all he met. He loved St. John’s and was a great representative of monastic values. Many will miss seeing him at Johnnie games. Bless John and his beautiful family.

I will cherish the fondest memories from time spent at the Grobe house with John, Joan and the kids. He always was a fun uncle and will have memories for a lifetime. Rest in peace.

My heart is broken; was so looking forward to meeting you and talking tennis at SJU. RIP

John always had such a big smile on his face.. what a wonderful personality…he will be missed by his classmates from SJU.!! Setz

John, a friend for many years, was a special man with an exuberant positive personality that brought light to every person he met. No matter what life sent his way he accepted everything with positive energy and reflection. He laughed into eternity; no stroke would affect his death. It was an honor to have known him. RIP, John

One of the best people I have known. He will be missed by many for his laughter, generous spirit and wonderful friendship.

Miss you for all the rest of my days.
