Cyril Schmitz (affectionately called "Smitty" by family and friends) died peacefully on February 3, 2010 surrounded by his family, who loved him very much. Cyril was born on January 16, 1923 in Roscoe, Minnesota to Joseph and Josephine (Wilm) Schmitz. He graduated from St. John’s University at Collegeville, Minnesota in 1947 after serving during World War II in the US Navy. After graduation, Cyril worked briefly for Western Electric in St. Paul, Minnesota as an accountant and then joined the Internal Revenue Service. During one of his IRS audits, he met Rose Marie Hesse who was working at the Carver County Courthouse in Chaska, Minnesota. Cyril and Rose Marie married on November 12, 1949 at Guardian Angels Catholic Church in Chaska and during their long and happy marriage were blessed with seven children. In 1950, Cyril accepted a transfer with the IRS to St. Cloud and he and Rose Marie made this area their home since that time. Cyril loved sports and coached Little League Baseball for many years. He also enjoyed watching the athletic events of his children. He found great pleasure in wild life, particularly during his later years observing snapping turtles at Lake Stephanie and pelicans on the Chain of Lakes at Richmond. After retiring from the IRS after a nearly thirty-year career, Cyril enjoyed a second career as a self-employed Certified Public Accountant, practicing for over twenty years.

Cyril is survived by his wife Rose Marie and sons and daughters: John, David, Mark, Mary Jo (Phil Holbrook), Carl, Stephen and Stephanie (Chris DeVine). Grandchildren Daniel, son of John and his wife Mary (Darragh), Lucy and Joseph, daughter and son of David and his wife Joyce (Wagner), Jenna and Sarah, daughters of Stephen and his wife Patricia (DeSanto). Great-grandchildren Fiona and Augustus, daughter and son of Lucy and her husband Jeff Foster. He is also survived by one sister, Dolores Zoelle of Mankato.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Arthur, Clarence and Jerome and sisters Josephine, Mildred Scott, Beatrice Kilian and Geraldine Stolton.

His family will miss Cyril very much. He was a dedicated husband and father. He was our best friend and advisor. We will never forget him.

Although we have never met, I wanted to offer my deepest sympathies. You can turn to the Holy Scriptures for help. For Psalms 34:18 assures us that God is near to those broken at heart and saves those crushed in spirit. He will certainly comfort your heart.

My deepest sympathy to the entire family of Cyril. My thoughts are with you during the next several days. He will be missed by everyone.

Carl – Sorry to hear that your father has passed-on. It sounds like he had a good life.
