Arzella P. Schaapveld

Memorial services will be held at 12:00 Noon on Monday, August 3, 2009 at the Daniel Funeral Home Chapel in St. Cloud for Arzella P. Schaapveld, 93, of Detroit Lakes and formerly of Park Rapids and Becker. She died on Friday, July 31, 2009 at Emmanuel Care Center in Detroit Lakes. Reverend Gary Walpole will officiate. Inurnment will be at the Becker Cemetery, Becker, Minnesota. Family and friends may call after 11:30 a.m. Monday at the funeral home in St. Cloud.

Arzella was born on March 31, 1916 in Becker, Minnesota to Louis and Honor (Cox) Stumvoll. She married Lloyd B. Schaapveld on June 19, 1936 in Beardsley, MN. Arzella obtained her B.S. degree in Education from St. Cloud State University and taught for over 31 years. She taught in Clinton, Duluth, Morrison County, Sherburne County, Becker and 15 years in Monticello. She retired in 1975 and then moved to the Park Rapids area and later to Detroit Lakes. Arzella was active in school activities, Bible school, 4-H and president of the PTA and Monticello Teachers Association.

She loved and enjoyed family and friend visits. Arzella also enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, traveling, gardening and helping others.

Arzella is survived by her children, Arzella (David) Metzger of Detroit Lakes, Sonia Zachman of Port Angeles, WA, Cindy (Darwin) Jacobs of Palmer, AK, Kathy (Larry) Martin of Norcross, Conrad (Claudette) of Graham, WA, Roy (Theresa) of Las Vegas, NV, Robert (Cindy) of Puyallup, WA, Charles (Eli) of Park Rapids; 32 grandchildren; 47 great grandchildren; nine great great grandchildren; brothers, Alvin of Sauk Rapids and Rodney of Foley; and sisters, Alice of Mequone, WI, Ernestine of Chillicothe, IL and Donna of Alexandria, MN.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son, Bernie; daughter, Carol Lindquist; brothers, Louis and Duane; and sister, Adeline Thorsten.

Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, Mayo Clinic Cancer Research or charity of your choice.
