Donald was born on August 3, 1953 in St. Cloud, MN to Leo J. and Bernadine (Huls) Barrett. He spent a good deal of his life on the family farm in St. Wendel with his three brothers and two sisters. Some years later he moved off of the farm with his mom and dad but remained in St. Wendel. When his father died in 1994 Donald cared for his mother.

Donald was a very kind hearted, loving son, brother, uncle and friend. He took such very good care of his mom for over sixteen years. On January 1, 2010, Donald was diagnosed with kidney failure. He had only one kidney and was on dialysis three times weekly for three hours each time. Donald had a difficult time with this life-changing event.

Donald enjoyed golf, fishing, most sports, being with his friends and up until a few years ago, snow skiing. Early on, he was somewhat of a Karate enthusiast.

Donald worked at St. Cloud State University as a custodial engineer for nearly thirty years. He really enjoyed his work and the people he worked with. He was a member of St. Columbkille parish and the St. Wendel Sportman’s Club. He will be greatly missed.

Survivors include his mother Bernadine; brothers and sister and their spouses: Sam (Sue) of Avon, Pat (Patty) of St. Wendel, Jerry (Elaine) of Sartell, Mary Ellen (Jim) Grunloh of St. Wendel; nieces and nephews; brother-in-law Al Schleicher of St. Joseph.

He was preceded in death by his father, sister Carol Schleicher, nephews Shane and Sherwin “Bryce” Barrett.

Memorials are preferred.

Don was a very caring person. He had a heart of gold, despite his dry sense of humor at times. I worked with Don for 8 years and he always had a smile on his face. I know he will be missed by all the faculty and staff at SCSU that got a chance to know him. I know he touched my life with his kindness and generosity!!!

My colleagues and I in the SCSU Dept. of Aviation will sorely miss Don. I already miss his dry, witty humor. May God comfort all his family and friends he leaves behind.

I was shocked and very saddened to hear of Don’s passing. I had talked to him on Tuesday March 30 and he was telling me how much he was looking forward to life after a kidney transplant. I always enjoyed talking with him and he had a pleasant smile and a humble spirit about him that will be missed by us in Headley Hall. It won’t be the same without Don around to talk about Twins baseball. RIP my friend.

To the Barrett Family,

I am so sorry for your deep loss. I do not think there is one heart in the Meagher family that isn
