Duane R. Bredeck

Duane R. Bredeck, 89, of Avon, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Monday, September 21, 2026. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, September 30, 2026 at 11:00am at the Daniel Funeral Home, St. Joseph. Pastor Matt Reeves will officiate. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Duane will be entombed at Fort Snelling National Cemetery at a later date.

Duane lived a life defined by service, honor, dedication, and an unwavering love for his family.

Born on March 8, 1937, in Melrose, Minnesota, Duane was the son of Marsia “Mother Teresa” Stein and John Bredeck. He grew up alongside his siblings Joanne, Diane, Roger, Eugene, and Terry, carrying the values of family, hard work, and service with him throughout his life.

Duane was a devoted husband to his wife, Suely Bredeck, and a loving father to his daughter, Amanda Fuchs, and son, Jordan Bredeck. He welcomed Amanda’s husband, Jordon Fuchs, into the family and was an incredibly proud grandfather to Ayden Bredeck, 17, Jayse Bredeck, 15, Raya Fuchs, 13, Hazel Bredeck, 10, and Isla Bredeck, 6.

For Duane, service was not simply a career. It was the way he lived his life. He proudly served his country for 11 and a half years in the United States Navy before dedicating another 31 years to the United States Department of State. His career took him and his family around the world, including assignments in Brazil, Jordan, Barbados, and Ghana. His work in communications supported American diplomatic operations abroad, and his service was recognized with a Meritorious Honor Award for his communications support during the Grenada crisis.

After decades of serving his country, Duane continued serving others closer to home. For at least 20 years, he worked at Albany High School, where he taught and worked with special education students and young people facing behavioral challenges. He had an extraordinary ability to look beyond a young person’s struggles and see their potential. He guided students, encouraged them, and helped many find a better path. His influence extended far beyond the classroom, and the lives he helped change became another important chapter in his legacy.

Duane was honorable, noble, hardworking, and profoundly selfless. He spent his life providing for his family, helping others, and simply showing up whenever he was needed. He never needed recognition for doing the right thing. He served because service was part of who he was.

He was a husband, father, grandfather, brother, sailor, public servant, educator, mentor, and friend. Above all, he was a man his family could depend on. He worked until the day he died, remaining dedicated to his family and to others throughout his life.
