Elizabeth Rose "Betty" Seymour

Elizabeth Rose “Betty” Seymour, age 100, passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, August 13, 2026. An Entombment service with Father Jeremy Ploof officiating was held on August 17, 2026 at Assumption Cemetery Mausoleum in St. Cloud. A Memorial Funeral Mass celebrating the life of Betty will take place at 11:00 am on Friday, September 25, 2026 at St. Peter’s Catholic Church in St. Cloud.
Betty was born on April 28, 1926 in St. Cloud, Minnesota to Emil and Elfriede (Wyrens) Fischer. She married Carroll “Sputz” Charles Seymour on April 28, 1949 at St. Mary’s Cathedral in St. Cloud. While raising a young family of 4 active boys Betty demonstrated her notable skills as a seamstress, a cook and a baker. The boys often had matching pajamas, shirts or jackets that she had made with the sewing machine set up on the kitchen table after everyone was in bed. On occasion jackets would be made re-using fabric from adult coats, while the well worn knees of blue jeans were given excellent repair for extended use. In addition to meals with tasty roasts, meatloaf, pork chops or Rice Krispy chicken, Betty served excellent fresh fried fish, roasted pheasant and duck that Sputz would bring home from his hunting and fishing trips. Of course, there was always a tasty hot dish that was part of the dinner rotation. The smell of pies, cakes, cookies and brownies often drifted through the house. When there was a special celebration at the grade school it was not uncommon for the boys to be dropped off with 2 dozen fresh baked cupcakes to share with classmates.
Once the boys were in school all day, Betty began working in the office of Northwestern Bell and continued there until she retired in 1983, which is the same year that Sputz retired from his career with the railroad. This allowed them to spend the summers full time at the small cottage on Grand Lake that they had purchased several years earlier. Over the years the cottage provided many wonderful memories for the grandkids as they learned to fish from the dock, paddleboat with grandma, tubing with grandpa driving the boat and spent endless hours playing in the water.
In her retirement Betty was a prolific crafter, ranging from quilts, to elegant beaded Christmas ornaments, whimsical stuffed dolls and many types of animals, as well as a wide range of wooden characters and birdhouses using patterns that were cut by Sputz on his band saw. They were quite a team. Many of the projects were donations to fund raising events for St. Peter’s church, as well as handmade presents for the grandkids to celebrate birthdays, Christmas and Easter. Betty volunteered her time in many ways, including Meals on Wheels, Birthright, stocking donations at the local food pantry, serving funeral dinners, caring for the altar linens, and making costumes for children in the Art and Soul theater program.
Betty is survived by her sister Kay Goering and sister-in-law Mary Fischer; sons Michael (Marguerite) of Holland, MI, Mark (Patti) of Smithville, TN, Chuck (Rose) of Chisago City, MN, and Skipp of St. Cloud; grandchildren Lauren (Adolfo), Jeff (Katie), Joe (Sarah), David (Kendra), Matt (Holly), Holli (Brandon), Heidi (Ryan), and Gabriel (Leslie); 16 great grandchildren, many nephews, nieces and extended family.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband “Sputz”; parents; brothers Frank and Tom, sisters Mary Jane, Doris, and Jeannette.
