Eugene H. "Gene" Marthaler

July 10, 1931 – May 28, 2011

Mass of Christian Burial will be 2 p.m. on Thursday, June 2, 2011 at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in St. Cloud for Eugene H. “Gene” Marthaler, age 79, of St. Cloud, who passed away May 28, 2011 at the Quiet Oaks Hospice House in St. Augusta. Burial will take place in Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis with full military honors. Visitation will be one hour prior to services on Thursday at church.

Gene was born July 10, 1931 in Greenwald, MN to William and Anna (Berns) Marthaler. He married Helen Simon on August 21, 1952 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in St. Joseph. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1952-1953. He graduated from St. Cloud State with a Masters Degree in 1957 and taught in the St. Cloud School district 742 for much of his life. He was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 428, Minnesota Korean War Vets, Knights of Columbus Council 5548, St. Cloud Eagles Aerie 622, National Education Association and Education Minnesota.

Gene is survived by his children Nancy (Dr. William) Goodwin of Omaha, NE, Thomas M. (Karen) Marthaler of Alexandria, Gary S. Marthaler of Los Angeles, CA, David W. (Jane) Marthaler of Canton, MI, and Paul E. Marthaler of Waite Park, 12 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, and brothers Virgil (Luella) Marthaler of Greenwald and Cyril (Margie) Marthaler of St. Joseph. He is also survived by his special friend Judy Nelson of Sartell and her family.

Preceding Gene in death were his parents, wife Helen (1995) and brother Donald (2009).

Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers to Quiet Oaks Hospice House or donor’s choice.
