Kent was born April 28, 1953 in Rochester, New York the son of Earl and Jeanne (Orr) Robertson. He earned degrees from Wake Forest University (1975), University of Cincinnati (1977), and a Ph.D. in Urban Affairs and Public Policy, University of Delaware (1981). Kent began his college teaching career at State University of New York-Purchase. He came to St. Cloud State University in 1983 as Director of the Local and Urban Affairs Program (currently Community Development Program). He was a committed professor and dedicated mentor. His work with students was the most valued part of his job. He took great satisfaction in guiding students toward achievement of their full potential. Kent was professionally accomplished. He was widely published, a frequent conference presenter and keynote speaker. He believed the heart of a community was its original downtown. He worked with communities across the country as a downtown revitalization consultant. An avid sports fan, Kent rooted for his beloved Philadelphia Phillies, Washington Redskins, and University of Cincinnati Bearcats. A treasured moment in Kent’s life was the Phillies’ 1980 World Series win.
He is survived by: wife Julie Broyles, St. Cloud, parents Earl and Jeanne (Orr) Robertson, sister Bonnie (Keith) Herrington, mother-in-law Rosella Broyles, six nieces and nephews, one great-nephew (another on the way), and members of the Broyles extended family. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, American Kidney Association, or St. Cloud State University Foundation in Kent’s name.
Guestbook
Kent was an inspiring teacher and mentor. There are precious few people in life who help us find something that’s more than just a job. I’m sure I’m not alone in remembering Kent this way.
I wanted to express my deepest sympathy to the Robertson/Broyles and SCSU University families following Kent’s recent passing. He was an inspiration to me and was instrumental in helping me find my career in public service. He will be truly missed.
