I’ll always remember Luby and Elmer singing in the Immaculate Conception Church choir many years ago when they lived by Little Rock Lake.
Luella A. "Luby" Hollenhorst
August 9, 1931 – April 2, 2026

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 8, 2026 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Sartell for Luella A. “Luby” Hollenhorst, age 94, who passed away on Thursday, April 2, 2026 at Talamore Assisted Living in St. Cloud. Reverend Ronald Weyrens and Reverend Vincent Lieser will concelebrate. Inurnment will be at the Minnesota State Veteran’s Cemetery in Little Falls. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Wednesday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Sartell.
Luby was born on August 9, 1931 to Frank and Angeline (Machtmes) Humbert in Melrose, Minnesota. She married Elmer Hollenhorst on December 29th, 1951 at St. Mary’s Cathedral in St. Cloud. Besides being an amazing mother raising five children, Luby was a very successful businesswoman. She graduated from the St. Cloud Business College and started her career at Nash Finch. After raising her children, she worked at J.C. Penney’s for 18 years where she was an award-winning Merchandise Sales Manager. She retired and worked part-time as the Customer Service Manager at Crossroads Center for 13 years
She was actively engaged in her community serving at the St. Cloud Hospital on their Auxiliary Board as Treasurer, Vice-President and President. She also volunteered countless hours as a patient visitor. She served as district representative for the Health Care Auxiliary of MN, was a lifetime member of VFW Auxiliary #428, volunteered at Country Manor and was an active member and greeter at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church.
Luby was a highly engaging conversationalist who made friends easily. She loved to travel and spent many happy winters in Arizona with Elmer in their retirement years. She was a woman of many talents and interests including bowling, golf and bridge which she played into 2026. She was a wonderful decorator and sharp dresser who could always find a bargain. She loved to read books, cook, bake, clean, entertain, track her financial investments, visit with friends, and watch Hallmark movies.
She is survived by her children, Dan (Kayla) Hollenhorst St. Joseph, Jean (Chuck) Reilein Charlotte, NC, Mark (Jane Ann) Hollenhorst St. Cloud, Julie (Mark) Lembeck St. Cloud and Kathy (Leon Fischer) Hollenhorst Becker, grandchildren, Samantha Handley, Abby Brook, Megan (Brad) Hoelscher, Brad (Anita) Hollenhorst, Cory (Michelle) Hollenhorst, Bubba (Hailey) Hollenhorst, Seth (Nicole) Lembeck, Tricia (Andy) Quinlan and Chase Lembeck, 16 great-grandchildren and sister, Doreen Hageman St. Cloud and brother, Roy (Nellie) Humbert Anoka.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Elmer Hollenhorst, brothers and sisters-in-law, Chris (Phyllis) Humbert, Mel (Lorraine) Humbert and brother-in-law Richard Hageman.
A special thank you to her friends/staff at Chateau Waters and the staff of St. Cloud Hospital, Talamore Assisted Living and St. Croix Hospice for their loving and compassionate care of Luby in her final months.
Memorials are preferred.
