Miss Neary was my 4th grade teacher. She introduced me to weaving and a lasting knowledge and appreciation of Native Americans in living in Minnesota. She touched many, many students through her years as a dedicated and tireless teacher.odyx

Margaret was born on December 3, 1912 to Catherine (McCormick) Neary and Ira Jerome Neary in St. Clair, MN. The family moved to Foley in 1914. She attended Dist. #9 in Benton County, Foley High School, and Technical High School in St. Cloud. After graduating from Tech High School in June 1932, she enrolled at St. Cloud Teacher’s College in September 1932. She gained her Teaching Certificate in June 1934, and obtained a contract in a rural school from 1934-35. Eleven years of teaching in the Benton County Rural Schools followed. She taught during the terms of Superintendents of John Kraus, Fred Agather, and Kenneth Camp. After attaining additional education at the U of M in Minneapolis, St. Regis College, and the University of Denver, CO, and courses at SCSU, she served as Principal and Art Teacher in Cambridge in 1944. Then she taught in the St. Cloud Dist. #742 until retirement in 1976. She enjoyed a total of 43 years working with children and parents. She served as leader in 4-H, Girl Scouts, and taught at many Minnesota State GS camps. She was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa, St. Cloud Secular Franciscans, St. Cloud Area Retired Educators, and served as MN State President of the Association for Childhood Education from 1965-67.
Margaret provided funds for the Katherine Drexel School Art Curriculum. It’s an excellent packaged program entitled ARTS ATTACK, a set of units to follow this program is under the direction of Deacon John Wocken. Another contribution to the school is the Marie McConnell Fund, which assists students with tuition. This special fund was donated by Margaret Neary and Mary Alice Tomporowski with the same objective, student encouragement. For the Jr. High Schools and High Schools, there is a membership in the McConnell Fund for scholarships. At St. Cloud State University, there was a large bequest in 1990. It is for freshmen students to apply for the “Margaret Neary Future Teacher Scholarship.” Contact the Alumni Foundation Center.

My thanks to Miss Neary who for the past 5 years has been helping me with our McCormick and Drew Irish ancestors.
My line had gone to Quebec,Canada in 1893 from Minnesota, and she had so many stories to help us fill in the lineage. She recognized some faces among the older photographs. Maybe she knows the answers now to our many questions .
What a treasure I found in Miss Neary.
Ms. Neary has given me such fond memories of so many things ~ identifying the various evergreen trees, weaving with a loom, studying the culture of Native Americans, getting us linked up with pen pals at the Mil Lacs Reservation, taking us on a field trip to meet our pen pals and visit the reservation and museum….
And she remembered my name many years later when she met my father.
The year she retired from teaching was my first year of teaching ~ I’m still teaching, and I believe the effects of her teaching and caring guide me every day. What a legacy she leaves us all! (4th Grade class of 1960-61, Wilson Elementary)
If ever a teacher should be held in high esteem, it would be Ms. Neary. She was a great teacher and will be greatly missed. Out of all the teachers I have had she ranked tops. If we could have teachers as caring as she was, kids would look forward to attending class. Rest in peace.
What a classy lady — I feel so lucky to have been able to sit and talk with a very special teacher just a few months ago. Her mind was so sharp and just a joy to be with especially going back to the older days at Wilson Elementary. Her teaching never left her as she was still teaching me as we sat. Ms. Neary you were always a gem and thank you for being you!!
May you rest in peace with the Lord.

Miss Neary kept us busy with: music (she played the autoharp while we sang) teaching us manners, how to “set a table” and all kinds of art projects – weaving, spool knitting, painting, seed mosiacs, etc. as well as cooking, writing and story telling. And of course…she found a way to work Ireland into every lesson plan! When we covered Geography: I will never forget her telling us that if you look at the Mississippi River on the map, you will see the river looks like a question mark and that St. Cloud is the dot of the question mark; that the “finger” of Lake Superior points to St. Cloud and, that all roads lead to Ireland.
She will be remembered always.
