My deepest sympathy to the family of Mark. We loved to have him and Bob stop at TCP and brighten our day with their stories and humor. We will miss his wisdom and memories of past day.

February 4, 1924 – January 22, 2008

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 AM on Friday, January 25, 2008 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in St. Cloud for Mark James Surma, age 83, of St. Cloud who died Tuesday, January 22, 2008, at his home. Reverend Bernard Gruenes will officiate. Entombment will be in Assumption Cemetery Mausoleum in St. Cloud.
Family and friends may call after 10:00 AM on Friday at the church. Daniel Funeral Home in St. Cloud is handling the arrangements.
Mark was born February 4, 1924 in Bowlus to Stanley and Mary (Schwientek) Surma. He attended country school in Bowlus. In 1943 as a proud American, he became part of the "Greatest Generation" by serving his country during World War II in the Navy. His service took him to Hawaii and on the aircraft carrier The Enterprise. After the war he worked at Northwest Airlines as a mechanic and welder. Later he went to barber school and was a barber for ten years in Upsala and St. Cloud. In 1955 he was cofounder and owner of Surma Bros. Construction and Tri-City Paving in Little Falls and St. Cloud. He married Lorraine Waletski on June 9, 1948 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Bowlus. He was a member of St. Michael’s Parish, and a former member of St. Peter’s Parish in St. Cloud. Mark was a devoted husband and dedicated father and grandfather. He enjoyed his time fishing at Big Birch Lake with his family and friends. He took many memorable fishing trips to Canada and was and avid hunter. Mark enjoyed playing cards, and spending his winters in Sun City, AZ for 25 years.
Mark is survived by his children: Mary Kay (Lee) Warrings, Bill (Ann) Surma, Patti (Patrick) Doherty, Don (Carla) Surma, Nancy (fiance Rich Martin) Anderson, Lori (Greg) Anderson; grandchildren: Angie and Jenny Surma, Erica Akkerman, Nick and Darren Surma, Jason and Emily Anderson; brothers Delmer (Mary Ann) and Robert (Iris), and sister-in-law Marcella Surma.
Preceding him in death are his wife Lorraine, his parents, brothers Merrence, and Stanley, Jr.
Memorials are preferred to the Poor Clares Monastery in Sauk Rapids.
