Michael blessed me with two wonderful children with our time together. Although things didn’t turn out, we eventually were able to have a civil relationship. I cherished the good years. He will be missed for his mostly cheerful self and abundant stories.

February 8, 1955 – July 3, 2026
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, July 8, 2026 at 11:00 A.M. at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church in St. Cloud, MN, for Michael Peter Nies, age 71. He died at his home in Sartell on Friday, July 3, 2026. The Reverend Scott Pogatchnik will be the celebrant. Burial will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Sartell, MN. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services on Wednesday at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church.
Mike was born on February 8, 1955, the son of LaVerne and Sybil (Budahl) Nies in Minneapolis, MN. The family eventually moved from the Twin Cities to Fargo, ND and later to Brainerd, MN in 1967. He graduated from Brainerd High School in 1973. In 1974 he married Debra Vickerman in Brainerd, MN. He later was united in marriage to Cheryl Janson in Hackensack, MN in 1986. After they were married, they made their home in St. Cloud, MN, until moving to Sartell, MN in 1999.
Mike eventually earned his Master Electrician Certification and started Nies Electric in 1984. He continued to operate the business until 2024 when he retired. He enjoyed flying, was a member of the Civil Air Patrol, and National Ski Patrol. His hobbies included camping, fishing, hunting, boating, traveling and any outdoor activity.
He was member of St. Augustine’s Catholic Church in St. Cloud, St. Cloud Sertoma Club, and the Experimental Air Craft Association.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by; one daughter-in-law, Becky Nies, one son-in-law, Steve Johnson, and a grandson, Wes Johnson.
He is survived by: his wife, Cheryl; his four children, Sean Nies, Michelle Johnson (Andy McGeary), Chris (Erin) Nies, and Kayla (Lucas) Youngblom; his brother and sister, Nancy Nies, Edwin (Geradette) Nies; nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

For many years, I had the privilege of ski patrolling with Mike, and will always be grateful for the time we shared on the slopes. Mike was always kind, generous with sharing his knowledge, and he always had a great story to tell. When he entered the ski patrol room or joined us on the chairlift, his cheerful smile and positive attitude had a way of uplifting everyone around him. I’ll always cherish the memories from the years we ski patrolled together. My deepest sympathy to his family, especially his daughter, Michelle, and to everyone whose lives he touched. He will be deeply missed.
