Nicholas T. Merten
December 6, 1930 – December 28, 2012

Mass of Christian Burial will be on Monday, December 31st at 10:30 AM at St. Mary’s Cathedral Lower Church in St. Cloud for Nicholas T. Merten, age 82, of St. Cloud, who died on Friday at Quiet Oaks Hospice in St. Augusta. Rev Tony Oelrich will officiate. Entombment will be in Assumption Cemetery Mausoleum. Friends may call on Sunday between 4:00-8:00 PM and on Monday after 9:00 AM at the Daniel Funeral Home in St. Cloud. Parish Prayers will be Sunday evening at 7:00 PM at the funeral home in St. Cloud.
Nicholas was born December 6th, 1930 in St. Cloud to Matthew and Johanna (Beutz) Merten. He graduated from St. Cloud Tech in 1949. Nick married Joyce Rymer June 17th, 1954 at Holy Angels Catholic Church in St. Cloud. He was employed as a Carmen for Great Northern and later Burlington Northern Railroads for 39 years. He retired in 1988. Nick was a member of St. Mary’s Cathedral Parish and NARVE.
Nick was known for a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Nick was an extraordinary handyman and was known as a jokester.
Survivors include his wife Joyce, children, Robert Merten (Carolyn) St. Cloud, Cynthia Haugen, St. Cloud, Tammy Kramer (Scott) St. Cloud, Kelly Merten (Ileana) Rice, grandchildren, Melissa Madsen, Matthew Merten, Brooke and Nick Haugen, Nicole and Courtney Peine, Ilexa, Johanna and Mitchell Merten, and one great grand-child, Carla Madsen.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers and sister, Al, Ray and Leo Merten, and Gen Sommers.
The family would especially like to thank the staffs at ICU at the St. Cloud Hospital and Quiet Oaks Hospice for the extraordinary care given to Nick in his time of need.

Nickie was great guy and a lot of fun. He had great stories to tell us, when we stopped by to visit. He will be truly missed. Say Hi to Ray for us Nick!
Nick was a great guy and friend to work with at the GN/BN, always remember the German lessons he tried to teach me! My sympathy to family.
