Robert C. Henningsgard

March 24, 1955 – June 3, 2023

Robert Crews Henningsgard (68) of Glenwood, MN passed away suddenly on Saturday, June 3rd 2023. He was enjoying a quiet afternoon with his partner Lynn Noll at their home.

Robert was born on March 24th 1955 to Helen Henningsgard (Crews) and Russel Henningsgard in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He graduated from Eisenhower High School in 1973 and attended Florida Southern College, then worked as a software engineer of computers and embedded systems from 1978 through his retirement in 2019.

He started his career at Excellon Automation and Gerber Scientific, before founding FASTechnologies and years later LapTwo Technology Corp. He was the kind of engineer that if given an unsolved problem and a blank sheet of paper, would invariably come up with a brilliant and elegant solution. Over the years he counted several of the largest tech companies on earth as customers (IBM, AT&T, Fairchild, Boeing, Texas Instruments, Lucent, Bell Labs, HP), as well as hundreds of smaller companies in over 45 countries. Although traveled extensively for work and put in long hours, he always did his best to make it home to see his family.

Rob loved electronics and computers, and was a HAM radio operator (WA0ZGT). He loved watching Monty Python and Mystery Science Theater 3000, listening to The Beatles and Steely Dan, engaging in philosophical pontifications, and always appreciated a well-crafted pun. In his twenties and thirties he enjoyed skiing, playing golf, chess, and guitar, and building and flying remote control airplanes.

Later in life, he enjoyed taking the boat out, getting together with family & the grandkids, and enjoyed lots of traveling with Lynn throughout the US & Canada, as well as England, France, Spain, Portugal, Mexico, and Greece. He liked watching formula one racing, he was a Vikings fan, and he enjoyed watching & armchair competing on Jeopardy a lot! He was always interested in politics & world news, as well as current events (and wasn’t shy about discussing them). He recently wrote to his son, “I think I’m one of the luckiest people alive”.

And now, Robert is no more. He has ceased to be. He’s expired and gone to meet his maker. Bereft of life, he rests in peace. He has flung down the curtain and joined the choir invisible. He will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered.

Robert was preceded in death by his father Russel, mother Helen, and sister Kristine and her husband Michael Cruikshank. He is survived by his son Steven, daughter Susan and her son Crews, and their mother Mary Henningsgard, nephew Matthew (Cristin) Cruikshank, partner Lynn Noll and her children Adam, Lindsay, and Carly.

A memorial service will be held at Daniel Funeral Home, 1010 2nd St. N. Saint Cloud, MN 56303 on Tuesday, June 13th at 4:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Heart Association.

Please accept my condoloncences: Lynn, Stephen, Susan, Matt and the rest of the Henningsgard extended family.
I met Rob in 1980 and we came to know each other well enough that we spent the next ten years looking for ways to work together professionally. Our first official project was a “Tycom” team that co-authored a patent for automated kitting for printed circuit board manufacturing (Rob was a consultant, but the project was his concept). In early 2002, I reached out for Rob to join Cirus Controls and he was part of the team from 2002-2004 and then again from 2012-2021. His contribution was central to the product development needed to achieve the success the company enjoyed in our marketplace.
What I will miss most is Rob’s un-quenchable thirst for knowledge in so many different areas. He was a great partner. He was honest, demanding, and when there was a deadline that mattered, the most committed programmer I’ve ever encountered. He enriched my life in many ways and I treasure our friendship. May he rest in peace.

So sorry for the loss of your partner, Dad,Uncle, and friend. Kris talked about you Mary so often. I felt like I knew you. My thoughts and prayers are with you all

I thing about Rob often and all of the great times we had in our younger years. Rob was always a person you could count on. He will be missed very much.
