Steven Joseph Hengel, Sr.

May 20, 1960 – December 27, 2023

Steven Joseph Hengel, Sr., 63, of Columbia, Maryland, passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday, December 27, 2023.

Steve was born on May 20, 1960, to Victor and Joyce Hengel in St. Cloud, MN. After graduating from Cathedral High School in 1978, he enlisted into the U.S. Marine Corps where he spent 20 years and earned the rank of Gunnery Sergeant before he retired in 1998. Post retirement, Steve started a new 25-year career in information technology, most recently working remotely as a backup support specialist for Veritas Technologies.

Although Steve was a private man, he was actively involved in the lives of his children and grandchildren. Steve enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, playing cribbage, and building puzzles. His selfless donation of a kidney to his sister, Kathy Jo, in 2003, will never be forgotten and highlights the incredible devotion, steadfast character, and generous nature that Steve possessed.

Steve is survived by his children Steven (Mandy) Hengel, Jr. of Katy, TX, Cassandra (Shannon) Dawson of Katy, TX, Joshua (Jessica) Hengel of Glen Burnie, MD, and Zachary Hengel of Columbia, MD; 12 grandchildren; parents Vic and Joyce Hengel, St. Cloud; and siblings Bob (Karen) Hengel of Sauk Rapids, Sue (Bob) James of Flagstaff, AZ, Kevin (Lori) Hengel of Horace, ND, and David (Kelley) Hengel of Bemidji, MN. He was preceded in death by sister Kathy ”JoJo”.

Thank you Steven Hengel for your good family, loving grandchildren, amazing service in the Marines and being a good, hardworking and helpful man with faith in God.  May your legacy be strong and reunions on the other side joyful.

Gunny, as subordinates, we loved you. You stuck up for us when you thought we were right and you still had our backs when you thought we could have handled things differently (better). You used those “good initiative, bad judgement” times as teaching moments. You were fair. You were a great role model for the lower enlisted whom you led. I appreciate you and the interactions we had as Marines, in Hawaii and in Korea in the early 90’s. Condolences to your family. Fair winds and following seas, Gunny. Semper Fi. Love.

Steve was a great Marine who served his Country with honor. We were stationed together at First Radio Battalion and I will always remember his sense of humor and outstanding work ethic. The world was a safer and better place because of Steve Hengel. Semper Fi Brother

Steve was a great mentor, and as we chatted more & more often these last few years, an even better friend. He usually had a good answer, or we had a good chuckle about nonsense if he didn’t. Straight shooter, told you the way it is, always dependable and willing to help anyone with anything. I will definitely miss the good times & chats with him. I’m glad I was able to help him for a change in our last conversation, just 2 weeks ago, but sad we won’t get to finish the rest of the chat. Rest well, brother.

I didn’t know Steve personally, but we worked together remotely on several projects. His professionalism, dedication and commitment were inspiring and will not be forgotten. Rest in Peace.

Steven I learned so much about Netbackup, cooking and so many other things during the hours we spent on customer upgrades. I always enjoyed your stories about life and your children and grandchildren. You spent your life serving and educating others, the world was made a little better by your time on it, my deepest condolences to your family.

I will remember Steven as a man, husband, father, grandfather and military veteran. Thank you for serving our country in the Marines. I have worked with you in various Veritas Support calls and truly enjoyed working with you, admiring your expertise, and loved getting to know you more as we kept working together. RIP my military brother. You have my respect, honor and gratitude. Once a Marine, always a Marine. My most sincere condolences to the surviving family.

See you on the oter side my friend.

Steve, I was very fortunate to have worked with you the past few years. You were a role model for all of us with your work ethic and commitment to doing things right. You will be very missed, my friend.
