Veronica R. Sawrey

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. on Thursday, October 22, 2009 at St. Louis Catholic Church in Paynesville for Veronica R. Sawrey, age 90, of Paynesville, who died Monday in Gowrie, Iowa. Burial will take place in the parish cemetery. Friends may call after 10 a.m. on Thursday at the church.

Veronica was born May 17, 1919 in Paynesville to George and Margaret (McCaffery) Gordon. She married Joseph Sawrey on November 4, 1937 in Cogswell. She was in business with her husband operating the shoe store in Paynesville for many years. She also worked at North American Creameries and Corner Drug Store. They also owned an egg-candling place in Eden Valley. She was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church, Daughters of Isabella and Paynesville Lions.

She loved flowers and gardening, and despite many food allergies, cooking for her family.

Survivors include her daughter Claudia (Bruce) Harrison of Harcourt, Iowa, daughter-in-law Marie (John) Kozulla of Apple Valley, grandchildren Lynne Sawrey, Dana (Syd) Sawrey, Christine (John) Demko, Dustin (Karla) Sawrey, Tim (Barbara) Harrison, Cindy (Troy) Melloon, Joel (Michelle) Harrison, 17 great grandchildren and brother-in-law William (Betty) Sawrey of California.

Preceding her in death were her parents, husband Joseph (2008), daughter Joeleen, son David and brother George “Cy” Gordon.
