Charles E. "Chuck" Daniel

January 16, 1948 – May 6, 2022

A gathering to celebrate the life of Charles E. Daniel, 74, of Cold Spring will be from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 31, 2022 at the Daniel Funeral Home in St. Joseph with a time of sharing at 6:00 p.m. Chuck passed away at his home on Friday, May 6, 2022 after a long, courageous battle with cancer.

Chuck was born on January 16, 1948 in St. Cloud to the late Loren and Esther (Kirchner) Daniel.  He graduated from Tech High School and St. Cloud Vo-Tech.   Chuck served in the US Army as a helicopter radio repairman during Vietnam.  He returned to the St. Cloud area and married Dianne Knettel.  Chuck owned and operated a gaming and pool table business for several years.  After selling his business, he worked at Hardrives, Inc. – until purchasing Grumpy’s Bar in Cold Spring.  He owned and operated Grumpy’s for 27 years where he gained lifelong friends.  He was a member of the Cold Spring VFW.

Chuck enjoyed wildlife, watching birds, the outdoors, ice-fishing, and hunting.  He loved socializing with family and friends.  He was a simple man who was not so simple underneath. He was an optimist despite the obstacles that came his way, a trooper in every way until the end.  He will be remembered as a trusting and loyal friend.

He is survived by his daughters, Jessica (Brent) Gromer of Rapid City, South Dakota, Carrie (Bryan) Russell of Atlanta, Georgia; grandchildren, Maddy and Tyler Gromer, Talia Russell; former spouse, Dianne Knettel; siblings, Lorna (Bernie) Sandkamp of Vermillon, Loren (Karlene) Daniel of Cold Spring, Debra (John) Jayne of Hanover, New Hampshire; and many relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Haylie in 1986; and sister, Michelle Daniel in 1991.

Memorials are preferred.

Rest In Peace buddy

My condolences to Chuck’s family and friends. Chuck and Mickey were really good friends of mine many years ago in Waite Park. I hadn’t seen Chuck for over 50 years since I haven’t lived in the area for many years but as I returned, and probably being 70+, I reminisced a bit about the good old days! Last summer I thought of driving out to the bar to see Chuck and rehash our early teen years….but didn’t do it! Then this news came. I really wish I had followed up on the thought of going out to Cold Spring. As I write this, I can still hear his laugh…it was so unique. I didn’t know Chuck as an adult but I have special memories of our time as friends in Waite Park. It is sad to hear of his passing!

Deepest sympathies to Chuck’s family. May your memories bring you peace and comfort at this time.

Prayers sent 🙏
