Memorial Services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Saturday, July 17, 2021 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in St. Cloud, MN for Dr. John (Jack) H. Hibbard Ph.D. Dr. Hibbard passed away Sunday, July 4, 2021, from complications of Alzheimer’s in Henderson, NV. The Reverend Matthew Crane and the Reverend Jimmy Joseph will con-celebrate. Burial of the urn will be private at Assumption Cemetery in St. Cloud.
Visitation will be on Friday, July 16, 2021 from 4 P.M. to 7 P.M. at the Daniel Funeral Home in St. Cloud and also 1 hour prior to the memorial services on Saturday at the church.
Dr. Hibbard was born May 25, 1946, to Howard G. and Eileen (Grady) Hibbard in Mitchell, SD. He grew up in Bonesteel, SD until his family moved to Verdi, MN in 1960. He graduated from South Dakota State University in 1968 and joined the Peace Corps soon after in 1969. He was sent to Tamil Nadu, India, to teach English. After returning from the Peace Corps, he taught high school English in Estelline, SD. Jack moved to Oxford, Ohio, where he received a Master’s Degree in British Literature from Miami University in 1973. He continued his education at Purdue University, receiving a Ph.D. in 1979 in British Renaissance Literature, with a specialization in Shakespeare.
In the fall of 1979, he moved to St. Cloud, MN, where he taught at St. Cloud State University for 35 years. During his tenure at St. Cloud State Jack received “Professor of the Year ” awards in 1996-97, 1998-99, 2006, and 2010. He received the Excellence in Teaching Award from St. Cloud State University in 1999.
In 1980, Jack married the love of his life, Leona (Lee) Witte, in St. Cloud. Together, they have been very active in their church. They loved entertaining friends and family in their home and they love to vacation at Grand Marais, along the North Shore of Lake Superior. After retiring in 2014, Jack and Lee moved to Henderson, NV, to be close to his daughter and family.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Eileen Hibbard, his brother, William J. Hibbard, his paternal grandparents, George and Ida Hibbard, and his maternal grandparents, Martin and Susie Grady.
He is survived by his wife, Leona (Lee) Hibbard; his daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Scott Siverhus, and two grandchildren, Miya and Will Siverhus.
